National awards in 2017, 2018 and 2020 for safety video training, vehicle incursion warning and remote-monitoring technology.
CSS SafetyInnovation and enhanced training have been at the forefront of our thinking for a long time, even before we were created. National awards in 2017, 2018 and 2020 showed that the seeds of CSS were already being sown.
2017: safety video training
In 2017, presentations were desk-based and read out, military style: "listen to this, sign this". Just one problem: people learn differently. A new approach was needed.
We hired an airfield, a film crew and some sturdy "volunteers" from our workforce, and set about turning our top ten highest-risk activities into step-by-step how-to safety videos. The results were immense: a reduction in accidents, near misses and lost time incidents, more volunteers for future filming, and the 2017 health and safety award from Kier.
2018: vehicle incursion warning
Industry recognition followed in 2018, when Richard's team picked up the Chartered Institute of Highways Technicians award in the Innovation category for a vehicle incursion warning system, designed to warn road workers of errant driver and vehicle incursion risks.
2020: Smart Taper and Solar CCTV
In 2020, another victory, this time with former colleague and long-term friend Simon Waterfall, for Smart Taper and Solar CCTV, two devices designed to remove operatives from areas of high risk. Real game changers.
