The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) ensures the UK construction sector has a safe, skilled and competent workforce. It sets industry health and safety standards, oversees training qualifications (such as SMSTS and SSSTS), and helps workers secure mandatory CSCS cards. Completing recognised CITB courses proves your competence on site, keeps you legally compliant with UK safety regulations, and opens up career progression.
As an approved CITB training provider, CSS is on hand to deliver a variety of CITB courses and refresher courses to all. Following the CITB syllabus provides the structure required to reach the standards needed in the UK construction industry; using the right instructors gives you the reassurance you need to interpret that information.

About this course
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course covers all relevant legislation and other essential elements relating to site management safety. It provides delegates with the knowledge of, and respect for, site safety, with the core aim of enabling them to manage health and safety on site following current legal provisions and within the context of their management or supervisory role; to develop an understanding of responsibilities and accountability for site health, safety and welfare; and to recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical and productive.
The course consists of exercises and tutorials featuring best-practice sharing, group work and case studies. In addition, delegates will cover legislative and practical knowledge and awareness of site safety. The course reflects national standards and industry best practice and is fully accredited in line with regulations.
On successful completion of the course delegates will receive the CITB SMSTS certification, which is valid for five years.

Construction legislation

Accidents
Accident costs, causes, investigation, prevention and reporting requirements.
Risk assessment

Safety management systems
Safety management systems, policies, plans, performance and measuring.
Management of contractors
Managing contractors on site.
Safe systems of work
Development of safe systems of work and permit systems.
Communication skills
Practical communication skills and techniques.
Behavioural science
Behavioural science, including awareness of human error, and motivating safety behaviour.
Organisational duties
Recognition of organisational duties and responsibilities.
Specific responsibilities
The specific responsibilities of managers, supervisors and operatives.
Site activity instructions
Production of site activity instructions (safe systems of work).
